2017 JLT Community Series Week 3 Richmond v Collingwood

Collingwood squanders a great start but clings on for another win.

This was billed as "Richmond v Collingwood", yet Collingwood wore the black shorts. Go figure.

Collingwood did all its good work in the first quarter. Richmond's quarter-time score flattered it. Had Grundy not gifted them a goal late in the quarter, they would have turned with a contribution of 1.2. We lost the rest of the game 62-93.

That's not the whole story. We won the odd quarters. The margins by quarter for the Pies went +38 -11 +6 -26. Maybe the wind had an influence.

I thought that Collingwood and Dustin Martin played the same sort of game: when they were good, they were very, very good; but there were many careless errors. Martin's best was sublime and seemed effortless; his worst was a class below this level.

Collingwood's howlers were generally errors of judgement. It seems they have been told to abandon Malthouse's dictum to hug the boundary. However, some of their attempts to centre the ball or switch play demonstrated a complete failure to understand risk/reward.

The wrap

Although I'm disappointed at the scoreboard for the last 3 quarters, I guess there were quite a few positives.
