Notes from the game: 2015 Round 21 Richmond

Collingwood suffers by far its worst defeat of the year.

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final
Collingwood 3.3 3.10 6.13 7.14 56
Richmond 7.3 10.6 14.9 23.9 147

You could say, with justification, the wheels fell off. We were mightily outclassed. Richmond put on a clinic - especially how to kick goals; how to kick goals on the run, how to kick goals from long range, how to take marks inside a crowded F50, nothing was beyond them, how to kick goals from plays that began on the last line of defence, how to kick goals from the pockets - in short, how to play football.

It wasn't that the Pies were hopeless; they played at about the standard you might expect from a primary school team. First and foremost, Richmond played like a team, a team that had captured some pretty impressive scalps during the year, a team that just might make a serious impact in the finals.

After the Tigers kicked the first 4 goals, Collingwood kicked the next three. For a minute, but only a minute, the Pies looked in this game. Since 25 minutes had already elapsed, an optimist might have hoped that we could go into the first break within a goal of our opponents. It was not to be. Richmond kicked 3 more goals for the quarter which went 34 minutes.

Intriguingly, though we kicked zero goals in Q2, by one measure we performed better than in the first quarter: we "only" lost the quarter by 14 points (compared to 24). In Q3, we did even better (6)! I'm sure someone will find a way to put a positive spin on these figures. I can't.

The only good news on the day was that the Bogan left at three-quarter time. Oh, and thank goodness it wasn't Carlton!

The wrap

On the other hand ... No! There is no other hand!1

  1. Dear Mr TFB

    There is little to say.

It was as bad as it gets.
    Outplayed , out coached.
11 frees to 18 – can you believe it? 5 fifty meter penalties – it must be a record.

We must be tanking – why go into a game with one ruckman and one tall
defender, against two tall forwards, a champion ruckman and a team with several fabulous defenders. I thought that it would be Riewoldf to get 15 goals, but I was a little wrong. How many players had played under10 games? How many under 50 games?
This weeks game we add in one extra player with 2 games experience.
I see that again this week we go into the game with a single ruckman and a single tall defender.
Answer me this – if we are struggling with only two key backmen, why aren’t we training up a tall player just in case there is an emergency and we need the extra to play in the backline.
It isn’t going to be pretty (or are they expecting a typhoon to sweep over the ground).

There was a little joy, and it came in the reserves. There isn’t much of substance in the Richmond reserves and it showed. However two strong points of interest – the 210 cm yank kicked 5 goals in a row, and a fill in with tenuous links looked terrific – 199 cm led and marked well and kicked accurately with good technique – name of Ash Close - I hope we draft him.

We must get players who are accurate kicks and we must get tall backmen.

And we must get a core of game day tacticians.
