Notes from the game: 2014 Round 22 GWS

Who cares?

The Footy Bogan did not watch the game live on Saturday. Rather, he went to pick up one of his reasons for living from the airport. He was concentrating on a sudoku when he felt he was being watched. He looked up to see a small person hovering tentatively. As they made eye contact, the small person favoured the Bogan with one of his ineffable beams - and all was right with the world. Welcome back, little man.

Later that night, the Footy Bogan watched the first quarter in replay. He was soon master of all the "dis-es": disappointed, disgruntled, discombobulated, disillusioned, disgusted, distressed, dismayed, disaffected, disengaged, disenfranchised by the distasteful disaster on display. By the end of the quarter, he had lost interest.

No, Michael, not disinterested which as you no doubt know means impartial.

He didn't have the stomach to watch any more, even though he knew Collingwood had won. I've said it many times before: it's not just about winning or losing; I'd rather lose pretty than win ugly.

He went downstairs and renewed his romance with 2011.

The wrap

The Footy Bogan considers his footy year over. To start the year, he said:

On last night's performance, I rate Collingwood about a mid-table VFL team.

Given that we have recently lost half a team through injury, the team we send out against the reigning premier next week will probably rate one league below the VFL. It's going to be a train wreck. It's probably unfair to send any players out on to the field. It will likely traumatise them for life. We'll be like Melbourne for a generation of players. Oh well.

The coaching staff need to examine the reason for all the soft-tissue injuries.

The Bogan also said:

If it's not a building year, if Buckley thinks he can make top 4 this year, I'm inclined to tell 'im 'e's dreamin'.

I miss 2011.

At least by watching replays of matches from 2011 the Footy Bogan gets to see high-quality football.

This is the Footy Bogan signing off for 2014, the most disappointing year in recent memory.

  1. Dear Mr TFB

As you are signing off for the year, I expect that you may never get to read this short note.

It is a pity you didn’t have the courage to watch the whole game.

You are wrong to “diss” it.

If you knew and understood great theatre (!) you would appreciate that here we had a forum full of the great themes of theatre.

In reality, nought to play for (a position at eight being mere fodder for others). We were horribly down on players with even more going down with major injuries. Being smashed in the first third of the game. What tragedy, what despair. Only one left on the bench available for interchange. Losing in most positions and thrashed in the midfield and at the throw ins.

An inglorious end to a lousy year.

    BUT

Cue rousing music from Les Mis.

We kept it together. We were magnificent. Every player trying his heart out, Against the odds. How enthralling as we gradually whittled the lead down and everyone playing purely for the jumper. Sadly not all supporters are on the same page. The heroes were many – the old warrior (Ball); the forgotten Sinclair; the baby Thomas; Langdon, now a senior player in our defence; the ruckmen trying hard to the end; best of all a kid called Broomhead, cool and seemingly emotionless slotting his goals, a name we will long see in the list of bests for a game.

It means little, a mere hill of beans, to those who can’t see it.
